Here's Stan releasing a Barred Owl after weeks of rehabilitation. She was happy to go home and lucky to be alive ! When she came to us she was in pretty bad shape!

Great Horned Owl

Judy Patton of North Carolina Rescued this guy earlier this year. He was just about gone; Judy called her Game warden and he brought him to us---weak, dehydrated, and with trauma to the head. Fortunately, nothing was broken. After recuperation, he was released at the same time as the Barred Owl in the previous photos.
The Great Horned Owl is one of the most aggressive birds of prey in the United States. They also have a reputation of the only owl that will attack and eat a SKUNK!
When we first got him we had to hold him on our lap and hand feed him every few hours. After weeks of feeding and care he was ready for release . . . I mean really ready; they will let you know in no uncertain terms "I want to go home!" (No longer was allowed to sit on my lap - - Ho Ho!)

Three Woodpeckers This gives a whole new meaning to the saying A BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH!
These are three Palliated Woodpeckers, the biggest of all woodpeckers. (Woody Woodpecker was copied after this species!)

Feeding Woody They have a raucous call that is unmistakable and loud! It sounds like a Howler Monkey gone crazy. These three were found by a logger inspector over in the Drakes Branch/Keysville area. Believe it or not they were still in the tree that came in on the truck. This picture shows how we fed them.

Mary and Woody Here is Mary feeding "WOODY". We fed and cared for them until they asked to leave (we had to be sure they could find bugs and search/peck for food.)
All three are gone now. It's kind of quiet around the house!

Baby Great Horned Owl I'm feeding a Baby Great Horned Owl.
(The big horns are on my shirt!)
Kathleen and the owl

Little Kathleen is a little apprehensive holding the baby owl . . . even at a early age a great horned baby will threaten (snap his/her beak) to let you know who is boss!
